“If the hill country of Ephraim is too small for the large number of people in your tribes, then go into the forests… and clear ground for yourselves there.”
—Joshua 17:15 TPT
There are verses in Scripture that don’t shout, but if you lean in, you’ll hear the voice of God whispering with profound clarity. Joshua 17:15 is one of them. At first glance, it may seem like a practical response to a spatial issue. But beneath the surface is a revolutionary principle—a divine invitation to expand not by leaving, but by clearing, not by grasping outward, but by growing inward.
When the tribes of Joseph approached Joshua with a complaint—that the land allotted to them was too small—his answer wasn’t to rearrange the borders or reallocate new land. He simply said:
“Clear the ground where you are.”
And what a word that is for us today.
⸻
Context: Promise Already Given, Now Make It Productive
The people of Joseph were already living in their inheritance.
They had received the land by promise.
But they hadn’t fully possessed it.
It’s possible to live inside your calling but not explore its full potential.
It’s possible to have territory granted to you by God, but still complain that it’s not enough.
Not because it isn’t enough—
but because you haven’t cleared the forests yet.
God’s promises are not always turnkey.
Some inheritances come in raw form.
Overgrown. Untamed. Full of potential but requiring partnership.
The promise may be yours,
but the productivity of it?
That’s on you.

Modern Application: Clearing the Ground Today
We often assume that expansion requires movement—new jobs, new cities, new platforms, new connections.
But what if growth doesn’t always mean going somewhere else?
What if it means doing more with what you already have?
Think of the single mom with a house full of kids, no margin, and no time. She wants to serve God in big ways but feels restricted. But what if her kitchen table becomes a place of ministry? What if her dinner prayers and gentle correction are her sacred altar? She doesn’t need more space—she needs to see the sacred in what she already has.
Or the business owner who’s ready to expand but feels blocked—no funding, no staff, no building. Yet there’s undeveloped land in their existing network, in the hearts of the two employees they already have, in the systems that could be streamlined, in the clients not yet fully served.
Or the person in ministry praying for a new assignment, a stage, a breakthrough—
and God is saying,
“You haven’t even cleared the forest at the edge of your current field.”
You don’t need new territory.
You need new vision for the territory you already have.
⸻
God’s Playground: The Unconventional and Unexpected
God delights in hiding greatness in inconvenient packages.
Clearing ground doesn’t feel glamorous.
Forests are messy.
They don’t whisper opportunity.
They shout effort.
They require tools, sweat, patience, and vision.
But this is exactly how God works.
— David didn’t need Saul’s palace—he ruled from the cave.
— Jesus didn’t launch from the temple—He transformed the world from wilderness, from boats, from dinner tables.
— Gideon was told, “Go in the strength you have.” Not the strength he was waiting for.
God’s playground is often hidden in the already here.
In what we overlook.
In the places that look too tangled, too ordinary, too unimpressive.
But if we’ll partner with Him—
if we’ll clear the brush,
if we’ll ask the Spirit to give us eyes to see what’s possible—
what once looked like limitation becomes the very site of multiplication.
⸻
Ask: What Forest Needs Clearing in My Life?
— Is it your schedule?
— Your mindset?
— Old fears or assumptions about what “growth” must look like?
— Is there undeveloped land in your creativity, your home, your community, your current relationships?
— Is there a calling you already walk in, but haven’t fully cultivated?
The forest is not your obstacle.
It’s your invitation.
⸻
A Personal Declaration: I Will Clear the Ground
I declare that I already have what I need to take my next step.
I will not overlook the land God has given me.
I will ask for vision, clarity, and courage to see the forest not as a limitation but as my launchpad.
I believe that God does not waste space—
and if He placed me here,
then this place is ripe with promise.
I will not compare my clearing to someone else’s expansion.
I will be faithful with what is already in my hands.
And I will find abundance in unexpected places.
⸻
A Prayer for Vision and Courage to Clear the Ground
Holy Spirit,
Open my eyes to see what You’ve already placed around me.
I don’t want to miss the hidden abundance in the forests of my life.
Forgive me for waiting on new land
when You’ve already given me trees to clear,
roots to dig up,
soil to till.
Help me steward what I have.
Show me the gold beneath the overgrowth.
Help me expand where I stand.
Let me hear Your voice in the quiet places,
and recognize that growth starts right here.
Thank You for the inheritance I already live in.
Give me the strength to clear it,
cultivate it,
and build something beautiful—
right where I am.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
⸻
Final Thought: Expansion Begins with Clarity, Not Distance
If you’re feeling like you’ve hit a wall,
like there’s no space left to grow,
before you search outward—
look inward and around.
There may be more to develop right where you are.
The next level may be hidden in what feels too small, too dense, too common.
Ask the Holy Spirit:
“Where is the forest You want me to clear?”
And then listen.
Watch.
And begin.
Because breakthrough doesn’t always look like new land—
sometimes it looks like clearing the ground where you already stand.
