Hidden on Purpose

“But [in fact] she had brought the scouts up to the roof and had hidden them under the stalks of flax which she had laid in order on the roof [to dry].”

—Joshua 2:6 AMP

Nothing in Scripture is without meaning.

No detail is wasted.

No word is filler.

And certainly—no hiding is without purpose.

God often does His deepest work in the places no one is looking.

And sometimes, the most pivotal moments in history begin under stalks of flax on an obscure rooftop in a city doomed for destruction.

This isn’t just about two spies hidden in the city of Jericho.

This is about the way God strategically hides people, gifts, dreams, and destinies—

not to bury them, but to protect and prepare them.

He hides you in unlikely places,

through unlikely people,

with unseen purpose

—until the fullness of time.

The Rooftop Was Not Random

Joshua 2:6 doesn’t just say they were hidden.

It tells us how they were hidden—beneath flax that Rahab had laid in order to dry.

This is not a throwaway detail.

It’s a divine clue.

Flax was used for making linen—laborious, tedious, and precise work. It had to be laid in straight lines and allowed to dry. This was ordinary, domestic activity. The kind of thing no one would notice. The kind of thing that didn’t seem “spiritual” at all.

And yet that—the mundane, the overlooked, the quiet corner of daily life—

became the hiding place of God’s redemptive plan.

He doesn’t just work in cathedrals and miracles.

He works in rooftop corners and cloth-making routines.

When God Hides You in Unlikely Places

You may feel like you’re under flax right now.

Hidden. Covered. Forgotten.

Doing things that feel far from significant.

But what if your hiddenness is not punishment, but positioning?

What if what feels like isolation is actually divine insulation

a protective wrapping to shield you from premature exposure?

God hides for the same reason a jeweler covers a diamond before it’s revealed:

to protect it from fingerprints and thieves.

Because what is sacred must be shielded before it is shared.

Rahab Wasn’t Just a Hider—She Was a Heroine

Let us not overlook who did the hiding.

Rahab—a prostitute by trade, but a woman full of prophetic insight,

recognized destiny when it came knocking.

She didn’t just hide the spies.

She partnered with God’s plan, even before she fully understood it.

God often uses unlikely people to protect and elevate unlikely destinies.

And if you’ve been hidden by someone who doesn’t “fit” the mold—

if your covering has come through means or people that seem unconventional—

don’t discount it.

God sees hearts, not résumés.

And sometimes, He wraps purpose in the hands of those the world would dismiss.

When Hiding Is Part of the Process

Being hidden is not the absence of movement.

It is the concealed part of the journey where character is forged and foundations are laid.

Joseph was hidden in a pit and a prison.

Moses was hidden in the desert for forty years.

David was hidden in the caves, even after being anointed.

Jesus Himself was hidden in Nazareth for thirty years before His ministry began.

The hiding season is holy.

It’s where God silences the noise,

fortifies your spirit,

and prepares you to carry the weight of what’s coming.

What the Roof Teaches Us

The rooftop isn’t just a hiding place—it’s a threshold.

It’s elevated, but not yet public.

It’s high enough to be strategic, low enough to be unnoticed.

That’s the tension of divine preparation.

You are closer than you think,

but not yet fully revealed.

Don’t despise this altitude.

It’s where perspective sharpens.

It’s where God teaches you to see what others overlook.

It’s where you learn to be obedient in the quiet,

so you can carry authority in the open.

A Personal Declaration: I Will Embrace the Hiding

I declare that my hiddenness is holy.

It is not delay. It is not denial.

It is divine preparation.

God has tucked me under His wisdom,

and I will not rush the reveal.

I trust the process.

I trust the timing.

I trust that He knows how to prepare me

for the promise I’ve been chosen to carry.

I will not fear being overlooked.

I will not fight for exposure.

I will flourish in the unseen—

because what God hides, He is shaping.

A Prayer for the Hidden Ones

Father,

Thank You for knowing where I belong—

even when I don’t understand where I am.

If You have hidden me,

it is for purpose.

If You have slowed me down,

it is for preparation.

If You have placed me under the flax,

it is because something sacred is being protected.

Help me trust the roof.

Help me cherish the stillness.

Help me see the beauty in the shadows where You are still so near.

Let me not rush what You are refining.

Let me not despise the hiding.

Let me honor the process that prepares me for Your promises.

Because when the time comes,

You will uncover me,

and I will walk in what You have written.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.

Final Thought: The Reveal Is Coming

If God hid you, it’s not because He was done with you—

It’s because He was just beginning.

There’s no wasted detail in your story.

No wasted season.

No meaningless moment.

Even the rooftop matters.

Even the flax has purpose.

So stay hidden.

Stay yielded.

Stay expectant.

Because when God hides you on purpose,

you can be certain—

He’s getting ready to reveal you on purpose, too.
