Hummingbird Kisses

There are moments when heaven doesn’t shout.
It brushes past you.
So gently… you almost miss it—unless you’ve learned the holy art of paying attention.
Tonight was one of those moments.
I was on the phone with one of my girlfriends, and we were talking about Holy Spirit—the way He speaks, the way He comforts, the way He confirms, the way He answers without announcing that He’s answering. We had just finished praying a prayer that, to some people, might sound trivial.
But if you know the Father…
then you know there is no such thing as “trivial.”
Not when His eyes are on you.
Not when His love is personal.
Not when Scripture says He is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18), and that even the hairs of your head are numbered (Matthew 10:30). Not when we are told to cast allour cares on Him because He cares for us (1 Peter 5:7). Not when we are invited to pray about everything (Philippians 4:6–7), and to ask—because we have not because we ask not (James 4:2).
What matters to you matters to Him.
That’s not sentiment.
That’s covenant.
And right in the middle of us talking and praying—she tells me the hummingbird came.
Not later.
Not tomorrow.
Not as a “maybe someday.”
Right then.
A female hummingbird—she said—because she isn’t as colorful.
She came to visit her.
While we were talking about the Lord.
And something in me sat up like lightning just threaded through my chest, because I have lived long enough to know: timing like that is not random.
It’s the kindness of God wearing feathers.
And I heard myself say it before I even had time to think it through:
“It’s like Holy Spirit just answered what we prayed… and instead of giving you a butterfly kiss… He gave you a hummingbird kiss.”
And the moment I said it, I felt the stirring.
You know that stirring.
That quiet pull—like the Spirit reaching for your pen.
So here I am.
Because I know there’s more here than a cute moment.
There’s a message in the wings.
⸻
What a “Butterfly Kiss” Is—and Why That Language Matters
A butterfly kiss is a phrase people use for a soft, affectionate gesture—when someone brushes their eyelashes against your cheek or skin as a “kiss.” It’s light. Tender. Almost weightless.
It’s the kind of touch that says:
I’m close.
I’m gentle.
I’m here.
You felt that, didn’t you?
It’s affection without force.
And that’s why it fit perfectly—because the Lord often confirms like that.
Not always with thunder.
Sometimes with eyelashes.
Sometimes with small mercies so precise they leave you undone.
⸻
But a Hummingbird Kiss Is Different
Because hummingbirds are not soft in the way butterflies are soft.
Hummingbirds are tiny… but they’re powerful.
They hover.
They move with impossible precision.
They can stop mid-air.
They can fly backward.
They can remain suspended in a way that looks like the laws of gravity got interrupted for a second.
And that’s what grabbed me.
Because if a butterfly kiss is the Lord saying, “I’m tender,”
a hummingbird kiss feels like the Lord saying:
“I’m tender… and I’m intentional.”
“I’m gentle… and I’m precise.”
“I’m near… and I can hold you in place even while everything around you moves.”
A hummingbird kiss is not just affection.
It’s confirmation with velocity.
It’s love with accuracy.
It’s the Lord saying:
I can meet you in the smallest moment…
and still carry the power to suspend time.
⸻
What We Know About Hummingbirds—and Why It Preaches
The natural world is one of the Lord’s favorite parables.
Hummingbirds are known for:
Hovering—they can remain in one spot, suspended, as if held up by an unseen hand.
Speed and endurance—tiny body, astonishing output.
Agility—they move in directions most birds can’t.
Precision—they go straight to the source they’re after.
Nectar—they feed on sweetness.
And if you’ve ever watched one up close, you know the feeling:
It doesn’t just visit.
It arrives like a whisper that has wings.
It feels like a miracle that got small on purpose.
And spiritually—this is where it gets visceral—Holy Spirit does that too.
He comes close enough to make you wonder:
Was that real?
Did that just happen?
And then you realize…
He did it small so only the hungry would notice.
Because not everyone recognizes a sign when it’s quiet.
Not everyone knows the language of a hovering God.
⸻
The Prophetic Thread: Hovering Is Heaven’s First Move
This is where my mind goes, and I’m taking you with me.
Because the first time we see the Spirit in Scripture in motion, He is not rushing.
He is not frantic.
He is hovering.
“The Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” (Genesis 1:2)
Hovering precedes creation.
Hovering precedes light.
Hovering precedes formation.
Before God speaks and the world changes…
the Spirit hovers.
So when a hummingbird shows up—hovering, suspended, moving with impossible grace—while you’re talking about Holy Spirit…
I don’t think it’s random.
I think it’s the Lord reminding you of His pattern:
I hover before I speak.
I hover before I shift.
I hover before I birth what’s next.
And then you realize the kiss wasn’t just affection.
It was a signal:
Creation is about to happen.
Not out there.
In you.
⸻
Female Hummingbird: The Mercy of Subtle Glory
And my friend said she wasn’t as colorful.
Which means, in human terms, she looked “less radiant” than the male.
But she still came.
And that carries its own message.
Because so many people think God’s confirmations only come in loud colors.
Big signs.
Flashy miracles.
Over-the-top displays.
But sometimes the Lord sends the “less colorful” version on purpose—because the point is not spectacle.
The point is intimacy.
The point is: you didn’t need the brightest sign.
You needed the right one.
And Holy Spirit is so personal, so surgical, so specific… He will send a confirmation that matches your moment—not someone else’s story.
Because He is not trying to impress the crowd.
He is loving the one.
⸻
So What Is a “Hummingbird Kiss”?
If we’re going to say it in the language of the Spirit, a hummingbird kiss is:
A moment of divine precision—small enough to be missed by the distracted, but undeniable to the one who is watching.
It is the Lord answering in a way that feels like:
“I heard you… instantly.”
“I’m close… right now.”
“I’m moving… even if you can’t yet see what I’m building.”
It’s the sweetness of God—nectar-level kindness—delivered with hovering power.
And it’s also a calibration.
Because hovering trains your eyes.
It trains your attention.
It trains your discernment.
It trains you to stop calling “small” what heaven is using as a doorway.
⸻
How to Receive It When God Sends Something Better Than a Breadcrumb
Because let’s be honest: some of us have learned to survive on crumbs.
We take the smallest sign, we tuck it away, and we keep walking—half-grateful, half-guarded, still wondering if we’re imagining it.
But what if the Lord is trying to move you from crumbs to kisses?
From hints to holy confirmation?
From “maybe God is speaking” to “I know that was Him”?
So here’s the invitation tonight:
When the Lord sends you a hummingbird kiss—don’t swat it away with logic.
Don’t minimize it.
Don’t rush past it.
Stop.
Let it land.
And ask the simplest, bravest question:
“Holy Spirit… what are You saying to me through this?”
Because the kiss is not the end.
It’s the beginning.
It’s the Spirit hovering over your waters again.
⸻
Final Thought: The God Who Gets Close
The reason this undoes me is because it reveals something we forget:
God is not only sovereign.
He is intimate.
He is not only majestic.
He is mindful.
He is not only the Creator of galaxies—
He is the One who will send a hummingbird at the exact moment you’re talking about Him… just to let you feel His nearness.
So if you’ve been asking for direction…
if you’ve been praying and wondering if He hears you…
if you’ve been longing for something better than a breadcrumb…
hear this:
Sometimes the Lord doesn’t just wink.
Sometimes He kisses.
And tonight, if you’ll let it, that hummingbird kiss is Holy Spirit whispering:
“I am hovering over your life again.
I am answering you in real time.
I am closer than you think.
And what I’m about to do next…
will be just as precise as this.”
So stay open.
Stay watching.
Stay tender.
Because when God decides to confirm His love…
He doesn’t always do it with thunder.
Sometimes He does it with wings.
———
I Hear the Spirit
“Beloved, I am not only the God who speaks in thunder.
I am the God who hovers close enough for you to feel My nearness without needing to explain it.
That hummingbird was not random.
That was My tenderness with timing.
That was My answer wrapped in precision.
I am teaching you the language of the small—
because the small is where I train your discernment.
The distracted will call it coincidence.
But you are learning how I love.
I confirm before I complete.
I whisper before I unfold.
I hover before I create.
And when I hover, it is not hesitation.
It is intention.
I am steadying what is shaking.
I am softening what has gone rigid.
I am drawing your eyes back to Me—
so you stop looking for proof in noise
and start recognizing Me in proximity.
Let this be a seal in your spirit:
What you prayed was heard.
What you asked was received.
What you wondered about—was already answered.
And I did it in a way that bypassed striving,
because I am not trying to inform you of My love—
I am trying to mark you with it.
So stay tender.
Stay attentive.
Stay willing to be touched by what others overlook.
Because I do not just send signs to amuse you.
I send them to anchor you.
I am closer than your questions.
I am kinder than your fear.
I am more involved than you have dared to believe.
And if I can send a hummingbird at the exact second your heart was turned toward Me…
then know this:
I can also send the next step.
I can also open the next door.
I can also bring the next confirmation.
I am not teasing you.
I am leading you.
Follow the kiss.
Follow the hover.
Follow the sweetness.
Because I am guiding you—
not with pressure,
but with presence.”
