The truth is, we are never truly alone. Even in our loneliest moments, in those times when we feel like no one sees us, or when we face struggles that seem unbearable, I am convinced that our Creator is always with us. There’s a sacred mystery in this truth—an understanding that comes not always in the present moment, but often when we look back and see how God’s hand was gently guiding, protecting, and even carrying us through it all. It is in those moments of reflection, when the fog of confusion clears, that we realize we have never been alone.
You may be familiar with the famous poem, “Footprints in the Sand,” which captures this idea beautifully. The poem recounts a dream in which a person saw two sets of footprints in the sand—one set representing his own and the other the footprints left by Jesus. As he gazed upon these footprints, he noticed that at the hardest points of his life, the two sets of footprints became one. Feeling abandoned, he cried out to the Lord, questioning why he had been left alone during those darkest times. But the Lord, in His gentle love, responded that those were the moments when He had carried him. The very absence he felt was actually the presence of God’s sustaining strength. It’s a powerful reminder that, in our most vulnerable moments, when our own strength fails, God’s strength carries us.
When the Path Grows Dark: Finding Light in Unexpected Places
Life often feels like a labyrinth—twisting, turning, and seemingly endless. At times, we can feel lost, unsure of which way to turn or where the exit lies. But when you feel you have lost your way, when the walls close in and the path disappears beneath your feet, look up. In the darkest of nights, stars can be your guiding lights, each one a reminder of the eternal light that never dims. Even when the tangible dark feels like it is swallowing you whole, there is always a light above: the sun by day, the moon by night, or the stars that dot the sky. And behind them, if you listen with the ears of your heart, you will find that God is leading you on.
It’s in these moments of feeling lost that God often reveals His presence most profoundly. Like the Magi who followed the star to Bethlehem, God places signs along our path—guiding lights that, if we’re willing to see them, will lead us closer to His heart. Psalm 139:12 says, “Even the darkness is not dark to You; the night is as bright as the day, for darkness is as light to You.” This means that even when we feel enveloped by darkness, God sees clearly. He knows where we are and where we need to go, and He promises to guide us—sometimes through the gentle glow of a star, sometimes through the quiet whisper of hope.
Pain and New Beginnings: A Story Written by God
In my own life, I have faced many moments of pain—those times when it seemed as though everything was coming to an end, when hope felt like a distant memory. There were days when I believed I had reached the limit of what I could bear, when the path forward seemed impossible to find. But as I look back now, I can see that what I once thought was the end was not an ending at all—it was God leading me to a new beginning.
It’s a divine paradox—the way God uses brokenness to bring forth wholeness, how He transforms our darkest valleys into places where new life springs forth. “Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?” (Isaiah 43:19). Often, the new thing that God is doing in our lives requires us to walk through the wilderness, to feel the heat of the desert before we can experience the refreshing waters He has prepared for us. We may not see the full picture in the moment, but He is always writing a story that is bigger than we can imagine.
The painful moments in life have a way of shaping us, of drawing us closer to the One who holds all things together. They become turning points, where God takes what we thought was shattered beyond repair and molds it into something beautiful. Like clay in the hands of a potter, He uses our struggles to reshape us, to make us into vessels that can hold more of His grace.
The Invitation: Seeing God’s Hand in Every Season
This journey of realizing that we are never alone is an invitation to see God’s hand in every season of our lives. It’s an invitation to trust that He is working, even when we cannot see or feel it. Deuteronomy 31:8 reminds us, “The Lord Himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” This promise is not conditional on how we feel in the moment; it is rooted in God’s unchanging nature.
There are times when God’s presence feels as real as the air we breathe, and there are times when it feels like He is miles away. But in both seasons, He is still there. When the silence feels heavy, remember that His silence is not His absence. He is often closer than we think, working in ways that we may not understand until we look back and see how every step was ordered by Him.
So, when you feel like you’ve reached the end, when you’re struggling to see the way forward, look up. Look for the stars in the night sky, the small glimmers of hope that remind you that God is still guiding. And as you continue to walk the path, know that you are never alone. The same God who walked with Abraham, who carried David through his battles, and who led the Israelites through the wilderness, is walking with you now.
And maybe one day, as you look back on your own journey, you’ll see the footprints of the One who carried you, the stars that guided you, and the moments of pain that became pathways to new beginnings. You’ll find that even in the darkest nights, there was a light—a reminder that God is with you, that you are seen, and that you are loved. And that is a truth that will carry you forward, no matter where the road may lead.
