The Assurance of Faith: Holding Onto Hope Without Wavering

The passage from Hebrews 10:22-23 is rich with a deeper promise of intimacy with God, a call to faith, and a profound assurance of His character. Here, the author encourages us to draw near to God, emphasizing the nature of our approach, the clean state we receive through Christ, and the steadfast hope we are called to hold onto. It’s a call that transcends mere belief, urging us to experience a relationship with God built on trust in His unwavering faithfulness.

Approaching with a True and Sincere Heart: A Deep Dive

The invitation begins with the words, “Let us approach [God] with a true and sincere heart.” This is not just about coming before God in prayer or worship; it’s about coming with authenticity, with a heart that has been transformed by Christ’s love. The word “sincere” speaks to a heart that is transparent before God, unhidden, willing to be seen as it truly is. It’s about vulnerability, about bringing our whole selves into His presence without pretense.

This sincerity is coupled with “unqualified assurance of faith.” The phrase suggests a boldness that comes not from ourselves but from God’s promises. It is unqualified, meaning it is not limited or conditional—it is complete. This assurance isn’t based on how well we perform or how strongly we feel in a given moment; it is grounded in who God is and what He has done.

The unqualified assurance of faith means that our confidence before God does not fluctuate with our feelings or circumstances. It is rooted in Christ’s finished work on the cross, as Hebrews 10:19-20 reminds us that we have bold access to the Most Holy Place through His blood. This faith is assured because it rests not on our own ability to remain faithful, but on God’s unchanging nature.

Sprinkled Hearts and Washed Bodies: A Cleansing Transformation

The passage continues, “having had our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.” This imagery is drawn from the Old Testament rituals of purification, where priests would cleanse themselves before entering the presence of God. But here, it takes on a new, deeper meaning. Through Christ’s sacrifice, our hearts—the very center of our being—are sprinkled clean. This is a spiritual cleansing that removes the stain of guilt and shame, allowing us to stand before God with a clear conscience.

The “bodies washed with pure water” symbolizes baptism, which is an outward expression of the inner work of the Holy Spirit. It is a reminder that we are not just spiritually renewed but that our whole being—body, mind, and spirit—has been set apart for God. This cleansing allows us to come boldly before Him, knowing that we are accepted, loved, and made new.

Seizing the Confession of Hope: A Firm Grip on God’s Promises

The next call is to “seize and hold tightly the confession of our hope without wavering.” To seize means to grab hold of with strength and intentionality. It’s not a passive grip but one that is active and determined. The confession of our hope refers to our declaration of faith in Christ and the hope of eternal life that He has promised. It is the anchor for our souls, keeping us steady when the storms of life threaten to shake our faith.

“Without wavering” emphasizes steadfastness, a refusal to be moved by doubt, fear, or circumstance. It’s a call to endurance, to holding on even when God’s promises seem distant or delayed. James 1:6 warns against being like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. Instead, this passage calls us to be unshakeable in our hope, knowing that it is anchored in God’s unchanging character.

He Who Promised: Reliable, Trustworthy, Faithful

The foundation of this unwavering hope lies in the nature of God: “for He who promised is reliable and trustworthy and faithful [to His word].” Here, the author uses three powerful descriptors of God’s character:

  1. Reliable: The original Greek word is “pistos”, which implies someone who is worthy of trust, dependable, and sure. God’s reliability means that He is consistent in His character and actions. He does not change (Malachi 3:6), and His promises remain steadfast through time.

  2. Trustworthy: This speaks to God’s integrity—that He is who He says He is. It’s a reminder that God does not lie (Titus 1:2) and that His words are as solid as bedrock. We can place our full trust in Him because He is incapable of deception.

  3. Faithful: This is perhaps the most profound assurance. God’s faithfulness means that He is committed to fulfilling His promises. He is loyal to His Word, committed to seeing His plans through to completion. 2 Timothy 2:13 tells us that “if we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot disown Himself.” Even when we struggle to believe, God’s faithfulness remains.

A Promise That Awakens Faith: Trusting in the God Who is Enough

The deeper promise of this passage is not just about holding onto faith—it’s about knowing the One who holds us. It’s about understanding that the source of our faith is God’s own character, His unchanging nature, and His eternal promises. This awakens faith in us because it assures us that we are not alone in our efforts to believe. Even when doubt creeps in, even when circumstances seem contrary to God’s promises, we are invited to rest in the knowledge that God is faithful.

It’s a revelation that faith is not something we manufacture on our own—it’s a response to God’s reliability. The faith we need is already within us, waiting to be awakened by the truth of who God is. As we reflect on His faithfulness and His track record of keeping promises, our hearts are strengthened, and our hope becomes more secure.

Applying This to Our Lives: Living in the Assurance of Faith

So how do we live out the truths of this passage?

  1. Approach Boldly: Come before God with a true heart, knowing that through Christ, you are cleansed and accepted. Let His presence be a place of authenticity, where you can pour out your praises, fears, and hopes.

  2. Hold Tight: Seize the confession of your hope. Remind yourself of the promises of God, especially when doubts arise. Write down verses that speak to His faithfulness and meditate on them.

  3. Rest in His Nature: Reflect on God’s reliability, trustworthiness, and faithfulness. Let these attributes be the foundation of your faith. Remember that God’s commitment to His Word is stronger than any circumstance you face.

  4. Awaken Faith: Let the truth of God’s character stir your dormant faith. Recognize that He is the author and finisher of your faith (Hebrews 12:2). Allow your heart to marvel at the depth of the promise that is already yours.

A Call to Deeper Trust

This passage from Hebrews is a call to a faith that is rooted not in our own strength but in the steadiness of God’s character. It invites us to draw near with bold assurance, to hold fast without wavering, and to anchor our hope in the faithfulness of God. And as we do, we find that this journey is not just about believing harder—it’s about discovering the One who is always enough, the One who upholds His promises, and the One who will never fail us. It’s a life of assurance, a faith that is alive, and a hope that cannot be shaken.
