"I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints." — Ephesians 1:18 (NASB)
Throughout Scripture, God demonstrates His ability to enlighten us—to open our eyes to see hope in places we might never have thought to look. This hope isn’t born from the natural flow of life, where we predict outcomes based on human wisdom or experience. It’s the kind of hope that surprises us, that comes from the least likely places, and in the most unlikely moments. It’s the kind of hope that reassures us that God is not only aware of us but is intimately involved in the deepest places of our hearts.
God’s invitation to expect the unexpected opens our eyes to witness the extraordinary in what might seem ordinary. It’s as if, in the midst of our hopelessness or weariness, God is whispering, “Look again. See what I am doing where you least expect it.” This whisper becomes an invitation to reframe our view of life, to position ourselves to be surprised by the very God who delights in working beyond our expectations.
Enlightened Eyes: A Divine Perspective on Hope
In Ephesians 1:18, Paul prays that the eyes of our hearts may be enlightened. This is not simply about gaining intellectual understanding; it is about spiritual perception—seeing beyond the natural, beyond the circumstances, into the deeper, spiritual realities that God wants to reveal to us. When God enlightens our hearts, He is giving us the ability to see hope where we wouldn’t expect to find it.
The hope of His calling, as Paul refers to, is anchored in God’s eternal purposes for our lives. It is not dependent on our circumstances, nor is it shaken by the temporary challenges we face. But often, we become blinded by the weight of disappointment, loss, or uncertainty. We lose sight of the hope that is always present because our natural eyes are focused on the obvious—the difficulties, the roadblocks, the impossibilities.
But when God enlightens us, He opens our spiritual eyes to see beyond what’s immediately visible. He shows us that hope is present even in the places we’d least expect it. It’s as if God is lifting a veil, allowing us to see the hidden workings of His plan, the intricate details He is weaving together behind the scenes.
Hope in the Unexpected: God’s Surprises in Our Lives
One of the most beautiful aspects of God’s nature is His ability to surprise us. Time and again, God moves in ways we could never predict, bringing hope from unexpected sources and at unexpected times. Think of the empty tomb—a place of death and loss became the birthplace of the greatest hope the world has ever known. What the disciples saw as the end of the story was, in fact, the beginning of new life.
This is how God works in our lives. Just when we think we’ve reached the end, when hope seems lost, God steps in with a surprise—something we never saw coming. He delights in taking the broken pieces of our lives and creating something beautiful. And He often does it in ways that leave us in awe, reminding us that He is both sovereign and intimately involved in every detail of our lives.
When we lose the motivation to hope, it is often because we’ve become fixated on the ways in which we think God should move. We set our expectations based on our limited understanding, and when things don’t go as we planned, we feel disappointed, maybe even hopeless. But what if God is asking us to expect the unexpected? What if, instead of looking for hope in the familiar places, He is inviting us to look in the places we would never think to look?
The Unexpected Nature of God’s Work
Consider the many times in Scripture when God worked in unexpected ways:
Moses was tending sheep in the wilderness when God called him to deliver a nation (Exodus 3).
Gideon, the least of his family, was hiding in fear when God called him a mighty warrior and chose him to lead Israel (Judges 6).
Mary, a young, humble girl from Nazareth, became the mother of the Savior of the world (Luke 1).
Saul, who persecuted the church, encountered Jesus in a dramatic moment and became the Apostle Paul (Acts 9).
Each of these stories demonstrates the unexpected nature of God’s work. He didn’t choose the obvious candidates. He didn’t work in the way people expected. He chose unlikely people and used unexpected circumstances to bring about His purposes.
God still works this way today. He often shows up in the unlikeliest of places and uses the most unexpected means to bring hope, healing, and breakthrough. This is why we must learn to expect the unexpected. When we open our hearts to this possibility, we position ourselves to see God work in ways we never could have imagined.
The Gift of Expectation: Faith for the Unexpected
Expecting the unexpected doesn’t mean living with a vague sense of optimism—it means having a faith that is rooted in the character of God. It’s believing that God is at work, even when we can’t see it. It’s trusting that He is the God of surprises, the One who delights in bringing good things out of impossible situations.
God’s surprises often come when we least expect them, in the moments when we are most vulnerable or least prepared. That is why expectation is so important.
Expectation says, “I may not know how or when, but I believe God is going to show up.” It’s a posture of faith, a heart that is open to being surprised by God’s goodness.
When we expect God to move in unexpected ways, we stop trying to control the outcome. We let go of our preconceived ideas about how things should go, and we allow God to write the story. This doesn’t mean the road will be easy or without difficulty, but it does mean we live with a sense of anticipation—a readiness to see God work in ways that go beyond our natural understanding.
Hope That Transforms: The Power of God’s Surprises
When God surprises us with hope, it’s not just for the sake of a momentary encouragement—it’s a transformation of how we see Him, how we see ourselves, and how we see the world. The hope that God brings is living, dynamic, and active. It’s a hope that takes root in our hearts and grows, changing the way we approach life.
This kind of hope empowers us to face challenges with courage because we know that God is with us, working even in the hard places. It gives us the strength to keep moving forward, even when the way is unclear. And it fills us with joy and peace, knowing that God’s surprises are always good, even when they come in unexpected forms.
When we live with an expectation of God’s surprises, we also become instruments of hope for others. Our lives become a testimony of God’s faithfulness, of His ability to bring beauty out of brokenness, and of His power to turn mourning into dancing. People will see in us a hope that is not shaken by circumstances, and through our lives, they will be drawn to the hope that only God can give.
Expecting the Unexpected with God
God delights in opening our eyes to unexpected sources of hope. He knows our hearts, our needs, and our deepest desires. When we’ve lost the motivation to hope again, He steps in with surprises that remind us He is still at work, that He is still good, and that His plans for us are greater than we can imagine.
As you walk through life, expect the unexpected. Look for hope in the places you wouldn’t think to look. Trust that God is working behind the scenes, weaving together a story that will surprise you with His goodness. When you position yourself to expect God’s surprises, you will see Him move in incredibly big ways—ways that will leave you in awe of His love, His power, and His faithfulness.
God is the God of the unexpected, and He is always ready to surprise you with hope. Open your heart, lift your eyes, and be ready to see Him work.
