The Manifestation of Fruit

What Is Growing Because He Lives in Me?

Gifts may reveal what Holy Spirit can do through a person. But fruit reveals what Holy Spirit has been allowed to do within a person.

And perhaps the most beautiful evidence of walking with Him is not looking backward and saying, Look how far I’ve come, but discovering that somewhere along the way, people have begun encountering something in us that increasingly resembles Him.

That sounds like somewhere I would normally end.

So naturally, this morning, Holy Spirit seemed to whisper, Good. Start there.

And I smiled.

Because apparently today we’re walking the path backward.

Come with me into an orchard.

No labels. No signs. Just trees.

At first, you may not recognize what’s growing. But keep walking. Eventually, something appears on the branches, and suddenly you know something about the tree that its bark could never tell you.

Fruit reveals what is living within.

Yeshua said:

“You will recognize them by their fruits.” — Matthew 7:16 AMP

Not by how impressive they appear. Not by how beautifully they speak. Not by what they announce themselves to be.

By what grows.

And that makes me want to look at Galatians 5 a little differently.

Because Paul is about to tell us what becomes visible when Holy Spirit is given room within a human life.

And the word he chooses is fascinating.

Fruit.

⸻

One Fruit. One Spirit.

Here is our first breadcrumb.

I’ve heard the phrase fruits of the Spirit most of my life.

Love is one. Joy another. Peace another. Nine little pieces of spiritual produce arranged neatly in a basket.

Except that isn’t quite what Paul wrote.

Ὁ δὲ καρπὸς τοῦ πνεύματός — Ho de karpos tou pneumatos.

“But the fruit of the Spirit…”

Karpos.

Singular.

Not karpoi—fruits.

One fruit, described through nine beautiful characteristics.

“Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.” — Galatians 5:22–23 AMP

Nine expressions. One Spirit. One living Source.

And then I noticed something else.

Just three verses earlier, Paul writes:

“Now the practices of the sinful nature are clearly evident…” — Galatians 5:19 AMP

The Greek is ta erga tēs sarkos.

The works of the flesh.

Plural works.

But singular fruit.

Now, the singular word doesn’t mean every characteristic must mature at exactly the same pace. But the contrast in Paul’s imagery is beautiful.

The flesh produces works.

Holy Spirit bears fruit.

And suddenly the difference between performance and transformation becomes visible.

I can imitate patience. Perform kindness. Appear peaceful when nothing is disturbing me. I can learn the right vocabulary and know how to behave when someone is watching.

But what happens when I’m disappointed?

When someone misunderstands me?

When I have to wait longer than I expected?

When kindness costs me something?

Because fruit reveals what has been cultivated beneath the surface.

And this is where I love the Amplified:

“But the fruit of the Spirit [the result of His presence within us] is…” — Galatians 5:22 AMP

The result of His presence.

Not the prerequisite.

The result.

Yeshua said it another way:

“Remain in Me, and I [will remain] in you. Just as no branch can bear fruit by itself without remaining in the vine…” — John 15:4 AMP

There it is.

Presence before produce. Abiding before bearing. Connection before manifestation.

The fruit doesn’t create the relationship.

The relationship produces the fruit.

And eventually, the root begins telling on itself through the branch.

⸻

Love Was Already on the Path

Now walk backward with me.

Because Galatians 5 doesn’t begin with fruit.

It begins with freedom.

“It was for this freedom that Christ set us free [completely liberating us]; therefore keep standing firm…” — Galatians 5:1 AMP

Paul is addressing a conflict within the Galatian churches. Gentile believers were being pressured to accept circumcision and observance of the Mosaic Law as necessary for belonging to God’s covenant people.

And Paul is emphatic.

Yeshua has set you free.

Stand there.

Don’t return to a yoke from which He liberated you.

But then, in verse 6, Paul says something interesting:

“Faith activated and expressed and working through love.” — Galatians 5:6 AMP

Love.

There’s our first breadcrumb.

Keep walking.

“For the whole Law [concerning human relationships] is fulfilled in one precept, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’” — Galatians 5:14 AMP

Love again.

Then:

“But I say, walk habitually in the [Holy] Spirit…” — Galatians 5:16 AMP

Walk.

And in verse 18:

“But if you are guided and led by the Spirit…”

Led.

And finally, when Paul names the fruit of the Spirit, what comes first?

Love.

Do you see it?

Freedom.

Faith working through love.

Love your neighbor.

Walk by the Spirit.

Be led by the Spirit.

And the first manifestation Paul names is—

Love.

It was already on the path before we reached the orchard.

And suddenly I hear Yeshua saying:

“By this everyone will know that you are My disciples, if you have love and unselfish concern for one another.” — John 13:35 AMP

There it is again.

Recognition through manifestation.

Not merely what we profess, but what His presence produces.

And this is why fruit matters so much in discernment.

Not perfection.

Fruit.

A person may possess extraordinary gifts and still have areas of character that need maturing. Paul himself makes that distinction in 1 Corinthians 13, where even remarkable spiritual gifts amount to nothing without love.

Which brings me back to where we began.

Gifts may reveal what Holy Spirit can do through a person. Fruit reveals what Holy Spirit has been allowed to do within a person.

And Paul adds something extraordinary after naming the fruit:

“Against such things there is no law.” — Galatians 5:23 AMP

Think about where this chapter began.

Freedom. The Law. The attempt to establish belonging through outward requirements.

And now Paul describes the character Holy Spirit cultivates within us.

The Law can tell us what love requires.

Holy Spirit can grow love within us.

External instruction can identify a boundary.

Internal transformation begins changing what we desire in the first place.

God isn’t merely rearranging our actions.

He’s cultivating character.

⸻

Fruit From Another Kingdom

And then my mind went somewhere unexpected.

Fruit.

Walking.

Promise.

And suddenly I saw the spies returning from Canaan.

When Moses sent twelve men to explore the land God had promised Israel, they returned carrying evidence.

“They cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes; and they carried it on a pole between two men…” — Numbers 13:23 AMP

I love that image.

Before Israel possessed the land, they were carrying fruit from it.

They hadn’t settled there.

They hadn’t built homes there.

But something from the place they were being called to inhabit had already become visible among them.

Fruit from a territory they had not yet possessed.

And suddenly I wondered:

What if that gives us another way to understand the fruit of the Spirit?

We are living in this present world, yet Holy Spirit is cultivating within us the character of the Kingdom to which we belong.

And He begins making that Kingdom recognizable through ordinary human lives.

Love where retaliation would have been understandable.

Joy that survives circumstances that should have stolen it.

Peace where anxiety once ruled.

Patience when the waiting stretches longer than expected.

Kindness when there is nothing to gain.

Goodness when compromise would be easier.

Faithfulness when walking away would cost less.

Gentleness when strength could have crushed.

Self-control when desire demands to be obeyed.

And suddenly those nine characteristics become something far more beautiful than a checklist.

They become evidence.

Something of the Kingdom of God becoming visible here.

And perhaps that is why fruit is such a powerful image.

It isn’t merely something to admire.

Fruit can nourish someone.

Someone else can encounter what has grown.

Someone else can receive something they didn’t cultivate.

And perhaps that is one of the most extraordinary things about walking with Holy Spirit.

What He grows within us is not only for us.

Our lives begin carrying something that allows others to encounter His nature.

A taste of another Kingdom.

And isn’t that remarkable?

The supernatural isn’t always something happening around us.

Sometimes it is happening so deeply within us that it begins changing what others experience when they encounter us.

⸻

The Orchard Behind Us

And now I find myself thinking about how fruit actually grows.

Because fruit doesn’t appear fully ripened the moment a seed is planted.

There are roots.

Branches.

Blossoms.

Seasons of growth that may be difficult to recognize while they’re happening.

And I find that incredibly freeing.

Because I can look at the fruit of the Spirit and recognize places where Holy Spirit has changed me.

Places where I respond differently than I once did.

Where peace remains a little longer.

Where patience has become less of a struggle.

Where something that once provoked an immediate reaction no longer has the same authority over me.

And then there are other places where I can almost see the blossom and think, Well, Holy Spirit, apparently we’re still working on that one.

And perhaps that’s okay.

Because He never told us to manufacture fruit.

He told us to walk with Him.

To be led by Him.

To remain in Him.

And I wonder whether we sometimes spend so much time examining what hasn’t grown that we overlook what already has.

What if we turned around?

Not to compare ourselves with someone else.

Not to congratulate ourselves on our own goodness.

But to recognize the faithfulness of the One who has been walking with us.

Where has love become more natural?

Where has joy survived something that once would have extinguished it?

Where has peace remained?

Where are we waiting differently than we used to?

Where has kindness softened something hard?

Where has goodness changed a decision nobody else would ever know about?

Where has faithfulness made us steady?

Where has gentleness changed how we carry strength?

Where has self-control reclaimed territory that impulse once possessed?

And where is Holy Spirit still growing us?

Because there may be places where the branches are already bending beneath the weight of fruit.

And other places where the blossom has only just opened.

But we don’t need to tear open tomorrow’s fruit because we’re impatient with today’s blossom.

We need to remain.

To listen.

To respond.

To allow Him into the places we haven’t yet surrendered.

And to trust Him with the growth.

And now I understand why I felt Holy Spirit inviting me to walk this passage backward.

We began at the end, with fruit already hanging from the branches.

Then we followed the breadcrumbs.

The singular fruit.

The contrast with works.

The freedom.

The love that was already on the path.

The walking and the leading.

And finally, the fruit carried from a land not yet possessed.

And somewhere along the way, I realized something.

Perhaps we thought Holy Spirit was simply taking us somewhere, when all along He was growing something everywhere we walked.

And isn’t that beautiful?

One ordinary morning, we turn around and notice a stretch of the path that once seemed barren.

But it isn’t barren anymore.

There is love where resentment once lived.

Peace where fear once ruled.

Patience where frustration used to answer.

Gentleness where strength once needed to prove itself.

Something has been growing.

And perhaps the most beautiful evidence that we’re walking by the Spirit isn’t that we can point backward and say, Look how far we’ve come.

It’s that people begin encountering something in us that increasingly resembles Him.

Not because we’ve learned to decorate our branches with things that look spiritual.

But because we’ve remained connected to the One who gives them life.

And when someone reaches for what has grown there, they receive more than a glimpse of our transformation.

They encounter evidence of Him.

The path behind us has become an orchard.

And what others find growing on our branches is a taste of the One who has been walking with us all along.

⸻

I Hear the Spirit Say…

“Beloved, do not despise what is still growing.

You have looked at the unfinished places within yourself and wondered whether anything is changing.

But I have seen the moments you overlooked.

The offense you no longer carried. The conversation you handled differently. The peace that remained when fear tried to return. The kindness you extended when no one would have blamed you for withholding it.

You called them small.

But My child, that is fruit.

You keep looking for transformation in the spectacular, while I have been revealing My work in the subtle.

Do not mistake cultivation for deficiency.

I know what has rooted beneath the soil. I know which branches have been strengthened. I know what has been pruned, and I know what is preparing to bloom.

And there are things growing within you that you will not recognize until life touches the branch and reveals what has ripened.

One day, something that once would have shattered your peace will happen, and peace will remain.

Someone will touch a place where anger used to live, and kindness will answer.

The waiting will stretch longer than you imagined, and you will realize you are no longer the person who began waiting.

And you will know.

Fruit grew here.

So do not tear open tomorrow’s fruit because you are impatient with today’s blossom.

Do not compare your branches to someone else’s.

And do not confuse the places where I am still working with places where I have abandoned you.

Remain with Me.

For I am not asking you to manufacture what only My Presence can produce.

I am inviting you to give Me room.

Room to cultivate love where fear has taught you to protect yourself.

Room to grow peace where you once needed certainty.

Room to develop patience where waiting has felt unbearable.

Room to make My character recognizable in the places where your own strength has reached its limits.

And remember, beloved, the fruit is not merely for the branch that bears it.

There are people who will encounter My kindness through yours. My gentleness through the way you carry strength. My faithfulness through the way you remain. My love through the way you receive them.

They may never know the seasons of pruning, the hidden roots, or the quiet conversations we shared along the way.

But they will encounter what has grown.

And when you finally turn around and see an orchard where you remember only dirt, you will understand why I kept whispering, ‘Walk with Me.’

You thought I was merely taking you somewhere.

I was growing something everywhere we walked.

So keep walking with Me, beloved.

There is more life unfolding than you can presently see.

And when others taste the fruit of what I have cultivated within you, may they discover that the fruit was never pointing to the branch.

It was revealing the One who lives within it.”
